Obama and Drone Strikes

Malala Yousafzai was invited to meet with the Obamas in the white house. Afterwards she made a statement saying:

“I thanked President Obama for the United States’ work in supporting education in Pakistan and Afghanistan and for Syrian refugees. I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism. Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people. If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact.”

Obama is a bit of mystery. He seemed like a hard core liberal on his original campaign trail but to a large extent many liberals are disappointed with his record on a range of issues from civil liberties to the environment. But the one thing that stands out the most is Obama’s drone war, his escalation of drone usage from George W. Bush seems beyond strange.

The strange thing about his usage of drones is that it is literally hard to fathom what the motivation is. In cases where someone is willing to violate the rights of others it is usually in the name of some greater good. (I’ve talked about that here and here.) NSA spying would be an example this type of transgression.

What is really strange is that it seems that one would have to be retarded to not realize the net consequence on terrorism of drone strikes is going to be negative. For every terrorist you kill you create more by killing innocent civilians. But Obama is clearly not retarded, so, what could he be thinking?

Does he not realize it is a bad strategy? Does he think the net gain is worth the bad consequences in terms of creating more terrorists and the killing of innocent persons? Is it a political strategy? Could he be that cold hearted? I don’t think so. What is it?

Whatever it is he should probably listen to Malala.
