Philosopher, social psychologist, and founder of the Heaven≡Earth Foundation
I work at the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and contemplative practice. My current project is a framework called Coherence Universalism — a cross-disciplinary structural account of meaning, mind, and the conditions under which they hold together.
The framework integrates analytic philosophy, empirical psychology, theoretical physics, and the recognitions of the contemplative traditions, organized around a single question: what does it take for anything — a cell, a person, a community, a civilization — to be coherent in the structural sense, and what happens when coherence breaks down?
Foundations
Coherence Universalism has been a lifetime in the making. It began with a childhood spent on idyllic religious communes, living in communities dedicated to genuine spiritual practice, yet also burdened with deep trauma that the tradition did not have tools to address. If my childhood laid the foundation, the first ten years of my adult life set me on the path.
When I was 18, I had a spiritual crisis. I understood it to be God calling to me, telling me to dedicate the rest of my life to the spiritual path, and I spent the first decade of my adult life as a celibate monastic practitioner and spiritual teacher, studying the spiritual traditions of the world but also studying their effects on people who practiced them.
Academic immersion
After nearly a decade I felt called, in a different direction. I left monastic life to pursue graduate studies in philosophy. I earned a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Florida and then eventually continued on to a doctorate program in social psychology. After a decade in graduate school, the real journey began, the journey of integrating everything I had learned in my decades of study, not in an academic way but in my own life. I created this philosophical framework for myself because I knew that I needed a new way to be in the world.
The religion of my childhood, and the secular materialism of my youth were no longer adequate to the challenges I was facing. I knew I had to find something new. For the first time I truly turned inward. I surrendered to the mystery of the universe rather than trying to understand it, and through what felt like a magical series of events, Coherence Universalism was born.
Coherence Universalism
The Heaven≡Earth Foundation was founded as the publication and research vehicle for this work. Through the Foundation I’ve authored multiple books on the framework’s application to mental health, embodied practice, consciousness, ethics, and civilizational change. I’ve published research papers on coherence dynamics in physics and biology — work that surprised me when it produced specific testable predictions, and that has become an active line of empirical inquiry.
I’ve filed six patents on architectures for AI alignment and human-AI coherence, working on the question of what it would take for AI systems to behave in ways structurally compatible with what humans actually need.
Alongside the research and writing, I teach philosophy and psychology at Hocking Technical College and Zane State College, and teach Embodied Coherence — a movement-and-practice methodology that emerged from the framework — in Athens, Ohio, where I live with my family.
What animates the work, beneath all the specific projects, is a conviction that meaning and morality are real features of reality rather than human constructions, and that recovering them across science and contemplative life is the most important intellectual project of the present moment. The framework is one attempt at that recovery.
